What is chronic pain?

There are two types of pain. Acute pain is a disagreeable sensation meant to protect the body from further damage and alert that healing is required. On the other hand, chronic pain occurs after the “healing” from an injury or illness is complete, yet the pain persists for months or years. Chronic pain itself becomes the disease, and although the pain is not an indication of a direct injury or illness anymore, the experience of pain can remain and is real. Chronic pain comes in many different forms, but it is now being recognized as a medical condition in itself related to an over-active nervous system.
