Harvard studies showed that standing in a posture of weak body language for 5 minutes can increase cortisol levels (stress hormone). Avoiding weak body language reverses the cycle. Standing or sitting with shoulders slumped, head down, tense arms/shoulders—is “weak” posture.

You can do this technique standing or sitting. Try this technique as soon as you feel internal stress. It's also important to practice when you are feeling good!

• Roll your shoulders back and down your spine
• Aim your chest and forehead up towards the sun
• Place feet firmly on the ground, shoulder width apart
• Relax your arms at your sides.

Hold for 5 minutes if possible. The more space you take up and the more relaxed your muscles, the less cortisol you’ll produce, which will decrease stress feelings. This practice is safe and you can teach it to your child, family, or friends.

You can repeat it throughout the day EXCEPT when driving.

Always sit for 30 seconds to 1 minute after finishing a practice before getting up for your next activity. It is jarring for the body to jump up immediately.
